Is this Offensive? AVA Trade Commercial

I was sent the following video (embedded below) for a trading company. The commercial shows a Black, White and Asian woman preparing pecking each other on the lips before hopping into bed. Finally, a White man in a suit comes in and joins the three ladies in bed, after which a caption reads “It pays to Diversify”, a common trading tip.

Yes, the ad seems way off the mark for the company/product that is actually being sold (Ava Trade), but is it as bad as one commenter put it: “Congrats! you have managed to create an ad which is sexist, offensive, racist, lesbophobic, orientalist, colonialist and simply pointless. Maybe try a different approach, one which is really related to the product you are selling, assuming you are not an escort service.”

Check out the video and let me know if you were offended below:

I can understand why someone might be offended by the bigamy angle here – which is based in sexist religious doctrines, but I don’t see how it is “racist, lesbophobic, orientalist, colonialist”. Whoever made that comment tried to make a mountain out of a sand pit. Totally over-exaggerated the issue. I’ve seen many commercials over the years, by better known companies, that featured one WM with multiple WW hanging off their arms (which is just as sexist) and no one ever said boo about those ads. Why be so upset about this one, unless your the one who’s racist, lesbophobic (is that even a word?), orientalist, etcetera? Puzzling.

I don’t see this ad as racist I just see it as … I’m not sure what to call it frankly? Lame, maybe? Sexist, perhaps if they don’t have alternate versions with one woman and 3 ethnically diverse men. Of course then, you have to produce or variations and then it just starts looking like a porn set.

Does AVATrade cater to the porn industry? Is their only client Ashley Madison? Frankly, this ad would not make me run to them with bags of money.

Reblogged this on … but I digress.

I find this advertisement pandering to the lowest of the low common denominators…sexism and male fetishes, as well as sneering at the real value of diversity. Stupid ad…could only have been made by either permanent frat guys or unhygienic geeks who never get the girl, even in their dreams. Ugh.

I thought the ad was funny.

Unfortunately I have seen a number of Foreign exchange brokerages run pretty offensive advertising campaigns (e.g beauty pageants etc). Clearly trying to play up to the mainly male demographic, but it’s crass and certainly offensive. Its a shame when companies have to resort to crass advertising tactics in order to attract clients, rather than selling a service on the basis of it’s benefits. I hadn’t seen this advert until, I stumbled across your blog.
